FOCUS

“The Sermon on the Mount is probably the best-known part of the teaching of Jesus, though arguably it is the least understood, and certainly it is the least obeyed. It is the nearest thing to a manifesto that he ever uttered, for it is his own description of what he wanted his followers to be and to do. To my mind no two words sum up its intention better, or indicate more clearly its challenge to the modern world, than the expression ‘Christian counter-culture’. Let me tell you why.”

So says John Stott at the introduction of his commentary & study of it. This morning we’ll set the table for the next eight messages here @ Cornerstone by looking at & hearing from Matthew chapter 5:1-11. Oh how I hope we hear what God actually said & truly intends concerning what a blessed life is supposed to be.

The Beatitudes …

1. invite us to experience & express rich blessings & true happiness.

People who hear & do what Jesus says are blessed & happy indeed.

Matthew 5:1-11

2. are attitudes & priorities God desires & intends for us know & show.

Straight out of the gate in His first public teaching, Jesus “sets the kingdom table.”

Matthew 5:3a, 4a, 5a, 6a, 7a, 8a, 9a & 10a (11a)

Making It Real

1] Do you find yourself being drawn in by Jesus invitation & instruction?

2] Does the clearly intentional repetition cause you to consider these again?

Action Step

Prayerfully read & really ponder Matthew 5:1-11 each day this coming week.

Benediction

“May the grace of God strengthen & sustain you as you go to honor Him.

May you truly love & sincerely be a blessing to those in your life today.”
